You Learn (poem)

by on Mar.08, 2011, under Uncategorized

After a while you learn the subtle difference between holding a hand and chaining a soul.

And you learn that love doesn’t mean leaning.

And company doesn’t always mean security.

You learn that kisses aren’t contracts and presents aren’t promises.

And you begin to accept your defeats with your head up, with the grace of an adult, not the grief of a child.

And you learn to build all your roads on today because tomorrows ground is too uncertain for plans, and futures have a way of falling down in mid flight.

After a while you learn that even sunshine burns if you ask too much.

So open your own garden and decorate your own soul instead of waiting for someone to bring you flowers.

And you learn that you really can endure.

And you really are strong.

And your really do have worth.

And you learn.

And you learn, with every good-bye you learn.

LED light bulbs, part 3

by on Oct.27, 2009, under Uncategorized

Well, its part three since its the third type of purchase.

First purchase was at Walmart, one bulb for around 9 bucks.

Second purchase was the whole bunch of those 1 watt LED’s from Home Depot

Last week, while @ Costco, I purchased one of their dual packs of LED bulbs. They are quite impressive.

I think they are 3.5 watt output, have a larger than normal “glass dome” and are quite yellow compared to the others I have purchased. Not a bad yellow, more like a old school incandescent bulb yellow glow.

If I did not know it was a LED bulb, I would think it was a normal 60 watt incandescent bulb.

Thinking about buying some more when they come down in price.. I just wish they had made the glass bulb part on these more smaller, they will not fit into smaller fixtures, like outdoor light fixtures, and they are a very tight fit in recessed lighting fixtures.

Camping

by on Oct.27, 2009, under Uncategorized

I want to go. Not much more than that to say.

Thinking of Algonquin Park, in a Yurt. Although I would go in a tent if I had the proper materials to keep warm..

Hmmm.. I wonder if a electric heated blanket would work below me in the tent (heat does rise ya know..)

I may of just solved my heating issue..

Holy Cheap!

by on Sep.29, 2009, under Uncategorized

So, while out and about this weekend, I stumble upon some interesting finds at the local Home Depot store, and West 49. (a skate apparel shop I have not been to in about..6 years…)

At home depot, I was just browsing, etc, and also wondering if they sold LED lights, like WalMart is. Mind you, I find what I am looking for, but with a $28.00 price tag-per ITEM. (too expensive, even if saving on hydro)

So, I keep browsing, and on a lonely side rack what do I see? I see a :AS MARKED: item. the price was 2.00 on the plastic box, but the tag above it said final clearance- 1.00 each. What kind of bulb would be sold so utterly low? Why, none other than a Name brand 1 watt LED light for normal home use.

I bought what was left in that store- about 6 of them.

Got home, and started testing them. These are considered Party/Deco lights, so not general use. But what I have found is this:

-The LED’s put out about a 25-40 watt light equivalent. (estimated-also depends on what the bulb is reflecting on, etc)

-Don’t get hot- even after running for 24 hours. still cool to the touch. (Bulb, base, middle, etc)

-FOR use in WET LOCATIONS. (wait, what?) Yes, thats right, these can be used in a wet location, with the threaded part up.

-Just a generally good “ambient” room light. Most my hallways are now lit with them, less the front/backdoor entrances were you need to easily see when your getting in and out of a house.

Oh, that same night, I called a few other stores to see how many they had in stock. I found a local store with quite a few, and I ended up purchasing about … 30 more bulbs. (so I’m at 36 total now)

Than, today, I once again returned to that store, Bought another $30.00 worth of lights… this time mainly “house colors” warm and cool white.

After playing around with them for over 24 hours, I am quite impressed. Its no where near as bright as a 9 watt CFL, but hey, at a slightly lesser cost per item, and only using one watt, screw CFL. I have also found if you have lighting fixtures which accept 3 bulbs closely spaced together, its more than enough light for a stairway.

I plan on buying more. Don’t see these breaking on me anytime soon. Now, if only the light output was brighter…..but I can survive stacking 3 in a fixture.

Right now, (other than the office, kitchen, bathrooms, whole basement, and part of my bedroom) my whole house is using these LED bulbs. So, I went from -
1 incandescent bulb at 60 watts,
twelve CFL’s at 9 watts,
four CFL’s at 15 watts,
two CFL’s at 21 watts.- so total power = 270 watts.

Now, I replaced all that with those 1 watt LED’s. Yes, I did add some extra LED’s where it was still pretty dim. Like the lamp at the very top of the stairs, it used to have one 9 watt CFL, it now has three 1 watt LED’s.

All in all, I am currently using 25 LED’s in various places around my residence. Its not overly bright, but I can clearly see where I am going.

So, from a power usage of 270 watts- now its 25 watts.

(maybe I will buy lots more of these……. May come in very handy)

LED bulb @ Walmart for under 10 bucks? Count me in!

by on Sep.28, 2009, under Uncategorized

Well, I was at walmart a week or so ago.. just browsing around. Wound up in the lighting section to see if there was any new lights- and there was.

for $8.(and something cents) one can purchase a LED lightbulb, which uses 1.5 watts, yet it is as bright as a 40 watt bulb. (IMHO) Maybe even a 50 watt.

Its just a bunch of Gen 1 or 2 LEDs clustered together facing the same direction in a glass dome. Was quite impressed at it for a week.

Now, on the past weekend it decided to “kill” itself. I turned it on, and it only lights up about 10 % what it normally would. unplugged it, gave it some time off, than tried again. It still only put out about 10 % of what it should.

Going to call WalMart tomorrow and see what they have to say about it.

Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, OVER!

by on Aug.16, 2009, under Uncategorized

Okay. I’m at a friends house, in Hamilton, ON. Needless to say, I’m used to the “small town” from where I grew up, and where I reside now. Hamilton, is not a small town- even in the residential area. (let me make something clear with this small town, I grew up in a small town which became a suburb- we never and still do not have issues like Hamilton with random crime, disturbances, etc)

Mind you, the residential areas are nice in Hamilton, which is where I am staying right now. It is located close to a plaza, and I have had to personally call 911 over 3 times in the past 6 months, from everything as mundane to B & E in progress, to taggers falling off a roof and getting injured to, well, idiot people parking and fully blocking a private driveway, on a posted no parking street. (oh and there was a marked emergency vehicle in the driveway, and they still blocked it in by parking on the road…. wtf?)

Well, tonight was the most.. Hmm. unique thing I ever have dealt with- here. It involved police, pizza boxes and a dog, all @ 3.30 HRS in the morning.

I was half asleep watching TV in the living room of the house I am in, and I hear a quiet knocking. At first I assume its someone upstairs turning in bed, as the house is older, and tends to creek. Well, about 10 seconds later, knocking again, but louder, and not coming from upstairs. This time the dog wakes up and starts barking very loudly. Dog does not like being awoken by random knocking on a door apparently.. I quickly calm the dog down, and go and investigate.

Who could it be? The front door is not normally used, so I go and check the back door, in case it is someone who is a family member, friend, etc. No one is there. Knocking again. I goto the front door, and look out. What do I see? A young 20 something year old white male, shaved head, stocky build. No shirt. (the window was only on the high upper part of the door, at neck and above level)

I said “what” quite rudely, as I was half asleep, and dragged away from some tv cartoons, and I like my cartoons. Weird guy just looks at me and pretends he cannot hear me through the glass. (Idiot)

So I open the main door, knowing the screen door is firmly locked, and its a strong door as well. There is also a German Sheppard dog intently sitting right behind me, and I am sure this weird guy does not want to chance a tangle with a pissed off dog, as the dog was soundly asleep before the knocking. I say again “what!”

His reply was: “Is this XXXX ——— Ave? Someone called a male stripper.” It was at this point I give him a full “size up” (which was my second mistake) He is there, naked, no clothes, no socks, no shoes, no bag, no car, no anything. All he was wearing for modesty was his hands cupped over his.. well.. boyhood. He keeps insisting he was called for this address to perform as a male stripper.

I politely tell him to fuck off, which he retorts “Oh comon, I got a big C**K!”

I than tell him to get the fuck off the property, and that the dog will be outside shortly, and will make quick use of his appendage (no matter how small it is) as a new chew toy.

Naked boy runs to the property line, (its a full moon on this street tonight) and chooses a discarded pizza box to use as some modesty. I than close the door, as he is still standing there looking around, as people walking down the sidewalk stop in their tracks at this odd sight.

I than call 911. They respond shortly, and ask some questions, while I am outside with the dog. Naked boy is no where in sight.

I than see someone wearing jeans and hastily attempting to put on a t- shirt about a block away. Thankfully, the local police did catch this guy.

Who knows what he was doing.. And I am glad I answered the door, and not the other person who is here (who is a female)

So, wtf is with Hamilton? Is it the water?
